There is no equivalent word in English, though the concept is simple: Sobremesa is the time you spend at the table after you’ve finished eating. It’s that time spent after a meal, hanging out with family or friends, chatting and enjoying each other’s company. It is mostly used in relation to lunch, but can be applied to dinner as well, and often includes family members and also friends — or it can even be a business lunch.
We find this tradition fascinating, and we encourage you to share it with us by taking the time to relax after a meal with a coffee or digestive liquor, or by just continuing to hang out and chat at the table.
